NUR 4010 - Supportive Care for End-of-Life, Mental Health, and Trauma-Informed Care3 lecture hours 6 lab hours 5 credits Course Description This course focuses on the application of the nursing process with individuals and families in need of supportive care, with specific focus on mental health, trauma-informed care, and end of life. Effective use of resources, including biomedical and mobile technology, to promote self-efficacy and improved health outcomes for clients will be used across the continuum of care. Students explore their own implicit bias and therapeutic use of self as they apply effective assessment, communication, and intervention strategies in the care of individuals and families across the lifespan. Legal, ethical, and moral issues as well as the impact of culture, stigma, and access when advocating for clients and families in need of supportive care are examined and debated. To promote well-being as a future healthcare provider, students explore strategies to foster their own personal health and resiliency. Clinical experience is a component of this course. Prereq: (NUR 3020 or NUR 3015 ) and (NUR 3021 or NUR 3016 ) (quarter system prereq: NU 4700 or NU 4702) Note: None This course meets the following Raider Core CLO Requirement: None Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Incorporate principles of health promotion, health maintenance, complementary and alternative therapies, and trauma-informed care to provide nursing care for clients needing supportive care (Person-Centered Care, Population Health)
- Construct multidisciplinary treatment plans and apply the nursing process to care for clients and families in need of supportive care (Person-Centered Care, Collaboration)
- Integrate practice standards, pharmacological principles, and clinical reasoning skills into the nursing care of clients in need of supportive care (Clinical Judgment)
- Use self-reflection to explore one’s own beliefs, values, biases to increase self-awareness of the therapeutic self, ability to conduct sensitive or difficult conversations when applying the nursing process to clients and families in need of supportive care (Professional Role)
- Evaluate effectiveness of personal strategies that foster own personal health, resiliency, and well-being as a student and future healthcare provider (Professional Role)
- Deliberate ethical and moral dilemmas and legal issues and the impact of policy while exploring stigma reduction and advocacy for clients and families experiencing supportive care needs (Population Health)
- Participate in the role of care coordinator with other healthcare team members to advocate for and improve health care outcomes for clients as they transition across the continuum of care (Population Health)
- Promote an environment of safety, civility, and respect when caring for clients and families with supportive care needs in collaboration with the health care team (Communication, Collaboration)
