Overview
MSOE’s Global Opportunities provide MSOE students the chance to experience new cultures, gain new perspectives, and develop skills that can be applied in a global context. This is an excellent way for students to embody the MSOE mindset, which emphasizes hands-on, experiential learning and encourages students to be innovative, collaborative, and globally aware. These experiences will help to prepare future MSOE graduates for success in their future careers in a rapidly changing and interconnected world.
Study Abroad
By studying abroad, MSOE students can immerse themselves in a new environment and learn from a different educational system. They can develop cross-cultural communication skills, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities, which are essential in today’s globalized world. Additionally, students can gain insight into global engineering practices, experience different approaches to technology and innovation, and build relationships with professionals and peers from around the world. Working with peers and educators from diverse backgrounds, they can also learn how to navigate cultural differences and develop effective communication and leadership skills in a multicultural setting.
Key features of studying abroad:
- Instruction is in English.
- Participation does not delay progress toward graduation since all course work taken is integrated into the curricula of each MSOE program.
- Credits of courses where students earn a C or better will transfer back to MSOE.
- Students continue to pay MSOE tuition and fees. Financial aid and student loans apply.
- Certain academic requirements are applicable - see program director for details.
Support for studying abroad
- Students work with program directors (faculty) from their academic department to select courses that will transfer back to MSOE.
- Students work with the Office of Multicultural Affairs to work through logistics of studying abroad at our partner institutions.
Study Abroad Options

Germany
Students may spend their junior year at the Technische Hochschule Lübeck (THL), in Lübeck, Germany. Founded in 1808, the university is similar to MSOE in that it is an applications-oriented institution. Situated near the Baltic Sea, the beautiful city of Lübeck is a center of commerce, industry, and higher education, and offers a variety of recreational opportunities to young people. Much of its Middle Ages appearance is still intact in the older portion of town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The MSOE program consists of two semesters at THL, with extensive breaks to travel throughout Europe.
Year-Long Student Exchange Programs
Students in the Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programs or students in the Rader School of Business have the opportunity to study in Germany during their junior year. Students study at Lübeck from September through June. Upon graduation, participating students who meet all requirements will receive a degree from MSOE and the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences, as well.
Approved MSOE Majors
Single Semester Student Exchange Programs
In addition to the full academic year experience, the Biomedical Engineering and Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management programs offer single semester study abroad opportunities with the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences. MSOE students study in Lübeck from February through June, taking courses that transfer for required courses in their respective MSOE curriculum.
Approved MSOE Majors
Highlights of the Program
- Upon graduation, students participating in the year-long program have the opportunity to receive two degrees, one from MSOE and another from THL.
