NUR 3020 - Chronic Health Challenges3 lecture hours 6 lab hours 5 credits Course Description The emphasis of this course is the professional nurse as care provider, care coordinator, and advocate for individuals and families experiencing chronic health conditions. Students explore chronicity from a theoretical basis and apply the nursing process to chronic illness related issues across the life span. A foundation for empathetic nursing care is laid through discussion of trauma, health disparities and social determinants of health, developmental issues, and the cumulative effects of chronic health from the perspective of the client. Prereq: NUR 3010 , NUR 3011 (quarter system prereq: NU 3200, NU 3200L) Coreq: NUR 3021 Note: None This course meets the following Raider Core CLO Requirement: None Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Prioritize the delivery of safe, effective, compassionate, culturally sensitive, and holistic nursing care to clients with emphasis on restoration to the highest level of health in clients with chronic health concerns (Person-Centered Care)
- Integrate clinical reasoning skills and reflective practice when applying the nursing process to care of clients experiencing multiple chronic health concerns (Clinical Judgment)
- Incorporate therapeutic communication and person-centered health education that is culturally and linguistically responsive as a method to address and manage chronic health challenges faced by clients and their families (Communication)
- Demonstrate professional and personal honesty, integrity, and accountability for life-long learning (Professional Role)
- Integrate selected components of the professional role into the delivery of nursing care inclusive of the role of educator, advocate, and coordinator of care as clients transition across care settings (Professional Role)
- Utilize health information and biomedical technologies as support tools for both healthcare providers and clients to enhance quality and safety, the nurse’s decision making, and the client self-efficacy regarding chronic health concerns (Informatics and Healthcare Technologies)
- Demonstrate skills in managing the delivery of nursing care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team (Collaboration)
- Synthesize evidence from professional resources when discussing, planning, critiquing, and delivering nursing care to clients experiencing chronic health concerns (Evidence-Based Practice)
