ET 4620 - Data Communications4 lecture hours 0 lab hours 4 credits The concepts needed to understand the increasingly important field of data communications and networking are presented in this course. The course begins with a review of the characteristics of analog and digital messages, and A-to-D conversion. The course reviews AM and FM, and presents frequency-domain signal characteristics and modulations with digital messages (ASK, FSK, and PSK). Orthogonal signaling and multiplexing are presented. The principles associated with data communication, transmission media, interfaces, error control, flow control, synchronization, circuit-switching and packet-switching are investigated. Ethernet as a LAN configuration is studied. The course concentrates on the physical and data link layers of communication links and networks. The student examines the various options available in networks and systems. Commonly used protocols are emphasized. (prereq: EE 3001B or ET 3051 )
