UXD 2030 - Designing for Extended Reality

Course Description
The course provides a broad overview of designing immersive experiences in Extended Reality (XR), which is an umbrella term for Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). Students will learn differences between (VR), (AR), (MR), explore current trends and applications of these technologies, and examine different XR industry tools. Students will also explore usability, accessibility, and ethical concerns in designing XR applications. Hands-on projects will provide students with practical experience of the XR design process and prototyping XR design tools.
Prereq: COM 2001 , UXD 1001 , sophomore standing (quarter system prereq: UX 1400 or UX 1400H and GS 1002 or GS 1020H or GS 1002E)

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Explain the differences between AR, VR, MR, and XR, and how these applications contribute to creating immersive experiences
  • Articulate and apply the process of XR design to improve user experiences
  • Describe and employ the best practices and patterns of XR design
  • Identify and evaluate usability, accessibility, and ethical considerations when designing for XR
  • Design immersive AR/VR prototypes using industry-recognized tools
