CAE 3501 - Principles of Structural Engineering

3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits

Course Description
This course builds on concepts from statics and mechanics of materials to introduce the student to the principles of structural engineering. Students will be introduced to analysis of structural systems and the basic design of steel and reinforced concrete beams and columns.
Prereq: CAE 2512  (quarter system prereq: AE 2012)
Note: None
This course meets the following Raider Core CLO Requirement: None
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Describe loadings and design approaches - ASD and LRFD
  • Discuss the material properties of steel and concrete and the common geometric properties of steel and reinforced concrete structural elements
  • Explain the assumed mechanical behavior of flexural members and compressive elements made with steel or reinforced concrete
  • Analyze framing systems to determine load paths and loadings on structural components
  • Analyze statically determinate structural elements and systems to determine the internal forces and the displacements
  • Analyze steel and reinforced concrete beams to determine their flexural capacity
  • Analyze steel and reinforced concrete beams to determine their axial capacity
  • Design steel and reinforced concrete beams and columns for internal forces
  • Describe common connections between structural members
