BUS 2530 - Introduction to Finance

Course Description
This course introduces students to various aspects of financial management. Topics covered include a review of accounting, financial budgeting and forecasting, operating and financial leverage, working capital and financing decisions, current asset management, short-term sources of financing, valuation and rates of return, cost of capital, relevant cost in decision making, capital budgeting, segment reporting, internal transfer pricing, external pricing of products and services, and investment banking. Students are required to complete a term project analyzing the desirability of a major capital acquisition under different financing alternatives.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Understand the underlying concepts of finance, and analysis of financial statements
  • Understand how to use financial information to help them in decision-making
  • Have a working knowledge of contribution margin, and working capital management
  • Understand the capital investment process including determining cost of capital and selecting the best project using various financial management techniques
  • Use capital investment techniques to make capital investment decisions
  • Understand techniques for evaluating business segments and service departments
