MI 16020 - Information Security and Infrastructure

2 lecture hours 4 lab hours 4 credits
Course Description
In this course, students will learn the necessary infrastructure and security concepts to evaluate core information technology resources and infrastructure and identify their impacts on informatics strategies.  Students will evaluate high-level infrastructure to identify possible areas of needed improvement to support informatics solutions.  Finally, students will explore security risk management and the ways in which health care information systems are implemented and maintained to ensure confidentiality and data integrity. (prereq: None) 
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Evaluate existing infrastructure within an organization and summarize areas of concern that may affect informatics implementations.
  • Recommend high-level infrastructure strategies based on an organizational needs assessment.
  • Propose a security risk management plan based on the data maintained by an organization and the ethical, legal, and social considerations within a health care environment.
