Overview

A student enrolled in a degree program at MSOE may also earn a certificate in German. Upon completion of this course of study, students would have solid communication skills in German and a strong understanding of German culture and history. A graduate with a certificate in German would be attractive to business and/or industry in that they would possess the marketable skill of a language other than English. Total required credits vary from 6 to 12, depending upon the student’s German language proficiency upon entering this course of study. At least 6 credits must be completed at MSOE to earn the certificate in German. For more information see the certificates policy.

Required Courses

GER 1001 - Elementary German 3 credits
GER 2001 - Intermediate German 3 credits
GER 3001 - Advanced German 3 credits
GER 4980 - Topics in the German-Speaking World 3 credits *

Additional Courses

Students with advanced language proficiency who are placed into GER 4980 are required to take one additional course from those listed below to complete their certificate in German and meet the 6-credit residency requirement. This is not required nor optional for students who start their language courses at MSOE in GER 1001, GER 2001 or GER 3001., orSPN 3001.

AHT 2002 - German Art History 3 credits
GER 4980 - Topics in the German-Speaking World 3 credits *
HST 2022 - German History 3 credits
PSY 2010 - Understanding Human Language 3 credits
*GER 4980 is taught in German and topics will change periodically. Students may take the course a second time and get credit as an elective if the course topic has changed.

Total: 6-12 credits depending on starting proficiency
