Do you like mathematics but don’t want to become an engineer? Then the field of actuarial science might be for you.

In fact, actuarial science is rated as one of the best jobs in the United States. In almost every category, such as work environment, employment outlook, job security, growth opportunity and especially salary, a career as an actuary is hard to beat.

Actuaries are professionals who use math and statistics to manage risk, evaluate the likelihood of future events, and reduce the likelihood and impact of undesirable events.

Program Educational Objectives

Within a few years of graduation, graduates of the BS in Actuarial Science program will:

  • Gain employment in a position that is related to their Actuarial Science studies 
  • Pass the first three or four professional actuarial exams 
  • Continue to advance their professional skills through lifelong learning 
  • Pursue a graduate degree should they choose to 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to their profession by participating at least one professional society or service activity 
  • Practice their profession in an ethical manner 

Student Outcomes

Upon graduation, a student in the BS in Actuarial Science program will be able to:

  • Construct, solve, and analyze mathematical models using calculus-based mathematics, probability theory, and statistics for problems in Actuarial Science
  • Perform general mathematics including single variable calculus, multi-variable calculus, and linear algebra at a high level of proficiency
  • Possess a working knowledge of micro-economics, macro-economics, and principles of accounting and finance
  • Be proficient in the use of productivity and computational software applications used in statistics and Actuarial Science
  • Respect the ethical responsibilities associated with Actuarial Science
  • Work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Possess strong technical communication skills
  • Pass the first three professional actuarial exams
