The Leadership and Management track of the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program from MSOE, with its unique blend of nursing and business concepts, will equip graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to function effectively in health care systems. MSOE’s MSN program is based on the fact that nurses at mid-management, executive levels and nurse entrepreneurs must have the capacity to manage financial resources, manage human capital, analyze large data sets, understand complex organizational systems, and ensure quality and safety, all through the lens of nursing practice. The curriculum in the MSN program meets this need by blending the expertise of the faculty of the School of Nursing and the Rader School of Business with the student’s knowledge and experience. 

Designed to accommodate busy working professionals, courses are available through either on-line or blended-online format. The on-line format allows convenience for distance learning while the blended-on-line format combines the benefits of face-to-face interaction with the convenience of online learning. Both formats provide flexibility to balance graduate education with work and family responsibilities.

Accreditation

The master’s degree program in nursing at Milwaukee School of Engineering is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.ccneaccreditation.org).

Program Goals

Within a few years of graduation, graduates of the MSN program at MSOE will be able to:

  • Lead others and manage resources in complex health care systems with a sense of social and ethical responsibility.
  • Have the knowledge and skills desired by employers to progress in their desired career path.
  • Improve systems in health care to positively impact outcomes for patients, families, and communities.

Student Program Outcomes

Graduates of the MSN program at MSOE will be able to:

  • Exhibit exemplary professional practice in the role of leader, mentor, and role model for nurses
  • Effectively lead and manage the nursing workforce and/or interprofessional teams to deliver high-quality, safe patient care
  • Understand and utilize evidence-based practice in making decisions that are clinically and fiscally responsible
  • Create an environment where relationships are valued, shared decision making is expected, and where patient care is the main focus
  • Recognize the professional, ethical, and social responsibility inherent in the role of manager and leader
  • Manage the process of change with a strategic plan that moves the organization forward with an awareness of systems and operational issues
  • Embrace the use of a variety of technologies as an efficient and effective method to support data drive decisions as well as deliver high-quality patient care
  • Value the importance of engaging in ongoing personal and professional development through a process of lifelong learning
  • Practice sound financial management with an awareness of the impact of finances on patient safety and quality
