NUR 7200 - Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Theory 1

Course Description
This class is designed as the first in a three-course sequence in psychiatric-mental health advanced practice nursing with a focus on clinical practice guidelines for assessing, diagnosing, and treating acute and chronic mental health problems across the lifespan. The course emphasizes clinical interviewing skills, differential diagnoses, individual psychotherapy, psychopharmacological prescribing, and prevention of illness. A variety of modalities will be covered to develop skills in safe, effective, ethical, integrative, and holistic person-centered care and health promotion while advancing knowledge of the scope of practice of the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Demonstrate culturally appropriate person-centered therapeutic relationship-building, assessment, intervention, and evaluation skills in the holistic care of clients across the lifespan
  • Demonstrate understanding of normal and abnormal psychoneurobiology involved in depression and anxiety
  • Apply the basic principles, theories, and techniques associated with psychotherapy modalities
  • Demonstrate entry level knowledge of the principles of psychopharmacology
  • Discriminate between the major classes of medications used to treat depression and anxiety across the lifespan, including modes of action, etiology of serious and common side effects, and teaching implications
  • Promote a holistic integrative plan of care for clients across the lifespan
