ELE 4291 - THL Microwaves

3 lecture hours 2 lab hours 4 credits
Course Description
This is a placeholder course for the course Microwaves that is taken by MSOE students studying abroad at the Technische Hochschule Lübeck (THL) as part of the Electrical Engineering Exchange program with THL. It is not intended for regular offering at MSOE.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Design and analyze systems and subsystems for use in microwave communication
  • Apply RF design techniques in the microwave frequency range using various specific microwave technologies such as microstrip, waveguide or waves in dielectric
  • Design linear antennas as well as reflector- or horn-antennas for various purposes
  • Design matching networks using lumped or distributed elements of various technologies
  • Incorporate microwave measurement equipment for various technologies and can operate this equipment properly
  • Simulate microwave components and systems on different levels such as analytic models or 3D-EM
  • Design planar microwave components from specification, using simulation on different levels, prototyping measurement and documentation

Course Topics
  • Smith charts
  • S-parameters
  • Antennas
  • Wave propagation in different media
  • Components based on transmission lines
  • Ferrite components
  • Active microwave components

Laboratory Topics
  • Microwave components and measurements, network analysis
  • Microstrip filters and couplers
  • Planar microwave antennas, design and measurement
  • RF-Amplifier and transmission lines, network analysis and matching techniques

Coordinator
