IND 4430 - Lean Manufacturing Enterprise for Engineers3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits Course Description In this course, students learn to identify what is value-added and what is waste in any business process and learn to eliminate identified waste. Students also learn the value of multidisciplinary teamwork in a Lean Enterprise and will be introduced to such concepts as 5S, Value Stream Mapping, Single Minute of Exchange of Dies and Kaizen. Students utilize the phased lean implementation approach and lean analysis techniques in conjunction with multidisciplinary teams to improve a production process as part of multiple production runs. (prereq: IND 2030 or equivalent) (quarter system prereq: MA 262 or equivalent) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Follow a phased process for Lean Enterprise implementation
- Implement lean following the Toyota mindset
- Explain lean thinking and management methods
- Describe the eight forms of waste in business
- Perform waste analysis in business processes
- Explain the five principles of lean and how to implement them in business
- Apply the concept of value add and non-value add activities
- Explain and prepare a value stream map
- Explain and calculate takt time, pull triggers and Kanban quantities
- Explain the difference between “push” and “pull” and apply tools to accomplish pull
- Explain and apply 5S, cellular layouts, and leveling
- Explain kaizen
- Understand and apply Total Preventative Maintenance (TPM)
- Explain and apply A3
