IND 4630 - Product Design and Development Processes3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits Course Description This course introduces students to the product design and development process from the lens of human factors engineering. It includes a team project in which students are expected to propose an original design idea, conduct a needs assessment, develop and test a prototype, and create a financial analysis of the product of interest. (prereq: IND 3600 or instructor consent) (quarter system prereq: IE 3621 or SS 464 or instructor consent) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply the tools and methods used for product design and development from a human factors perspective
- Possess more confidence in developing a new product
- Be aware of the role of multiple functions in creating a new product (e.g., strategy, project management, finance, marketing, industrial design, human factors, engineering, production, supply chain, safety)
- Coordinate necessary roles, functions, resources, tasks, etc. to achieve a common goal
- Determine how to complete a needs assessment
- Determine how to develop, complete, and test a design prototype
