CAE 3861 - Specifications and the Project Manual1 lecture hours 2 lab hours 2 credits Course Description This course provides a working knowledge of the principles for writing effective specifications for building systems and materials, as well as interpreting standard construction industry contracts. Students will learn the formatting and writing requirements for specifications used in the construction industry, utilizing the CSI MasterFormat. Students will also review standard contracts such as AIA and EJCDC common form contracts. (prereq: CAE 1811 , CAE 1871 ) (quarter system prereq: sophomore standing) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the nature and responsibilities undertaken by parties to a contract
- Explain the basic terms and conditions in AIA and EJCDC contracts
- Describe typical construction project delivery methods
- Organize and prepare construction specifications and other Project Manual documents
- Use the CSI MasterFormat system of organizing specifications.
- Write construction specifications using CSI standard formats
- Compare and contrast various specialized specification formats to the CSI standard formats
