BME 2961 - Introduction to Human Body Systems for Radiological Applications1 lecture hours 0 lab hours 1 credits Course Description This course serves as an introduction to anatomy and physiology for body systems most commonly visualized with medical imaging. Body systems include the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, the musculoskeletal system, and the gastrointestinal system. Visualization and clinical assessment of anatomical and physiological systems in medical images is emphasized. Numerous case study examples are used to illustrate the advantages as well as practical challenges of medical imaging and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in visualizing human anatomy and function, and reliability in making clinical judgements. The significance of accurate ground truth information for clinical assessment, along with strategies to mitigate its effects on findings variability, is also discussed. (prereq: none) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the basic physiological function of each organ system covered in the course
- Identify names and structural features of anatomical structures salient to medical imaging investigation
- Recognize advantages and challenges of using AI-based medical imaging in visualization and assessment of human anatomy and physiology
- Describe potential consequences of errors and uncertainties in medical image annotations and strategies to mitigate these occurrences
- Understand practical challenges in identifying ground truths for clinical assessment anatomy and physiology in medical images
