HST 2053 - Music History3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits Course Description This course is meant to introduce the student to the history of modern popular music. As such a topic is quite broad, the course will focus on the evolution of popular music in a set number of genres over time. Close attention will be paid not only to the music itself, but also to the issues, ideas, and environments (in the United States and across the globe) that helped birth such musical forms: this course is interested in closely examining the context of popular music. At the same time, this course will cover both production and reception of music - and the way that technology is often utilized to disseminate music. This course meets the following Raider Core CLO requirement: Exhibit Curiosity. (prereq: none) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the relationship between economy and the development of musical genre
- Examine the relationship between mobility/migration/immigration and the development of musical genre
- Compare and contrast such seemingly disparate musical genres as country music, jazz, and punk rock
- Explain the processes behind the production, distribution, and dissemination of popular music
- Articulate an understanding on how the development of musical genres can lead to the creation of new musical styles
