HST 2041 - Cuban History3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits Course Description This course will introduce the student to the broad history of modern Cuba. Close attention will be paid to the country’s recent political history, as we discuss such topics as imperialism and life under colonial rule, the anti-colonial movement, the struggle for independence, the Revolutionary movement, and post-revolution politics. At the same time, issues of economic development will also be covered. The people of Cuba will remain center stage throughout the term, as will the ways such individuals navigated the worlds of race/ethnicity, political violence, the Cold War, and the contemporary War on Terror in Cuba. This course meets the following Raider Core CLO requirement: Exhibit Curiosity. (prereq: none) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss the development of slavery in Cuba - and the resistance to such a development
- Examine the multifaceted movement for independence in Cuba throughout the nineteenth century
- Explain how and why the United States intervened in Cuba in the late nineteenth century
- Examine the impetus and repercussions of the Cuban Revolution (1953-1959)
- Compare and contrast the relationship between Cuba and the United States and Cuba and the Soviet Union during the Cold War
- Discuss the economic, political, and cultural conditions of post-Cold War Cuba
- Explain the relationship between Cuba and the twenty-first century global War on Terror
