BUS 4500 - Management Control Systems and Advanced Managerial Accounting

Course Description
This course builds on the fundamental concepts and methods used in managerial cost accounting. This course uses case studies to analyze and evaluate methods of controlling and motivating responsibility centers. This includes cost, revenue, profit, and investment centers.  The following topics and their implications in managerial accounting are covered: complex capital budgeting, quality management, managerial accounting analytics and lean accounting; motivational aspects, and techniques for measuring performance of those responsible for budgets; return on investment and residual income; and transfer pricing techniques. (prereq: BUS 3560 ) (quarter system prereq: BA 3580)
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Analyze complex costing data and make informed decisions using that data
  • Apply the theoretical concepts of behavioral management as it applies to financial performance measurement, evaluation, and incentives
  • Assess the strategic cost analysis process including determining relevant data
  • Compare methods of measuring efficiency and effectiveness in various decentralized operations
  • Examine problems with transfer pricing
  • Demonstrate and analyze how innovative managerial accounting techniques are used to better manage businesses
