ELE 4901 - Electrical Engineering - Senior Design Project I1 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits Course Description This is the first course in the two-course EE senior design sequence. Students form design teams consisting of three to five members and define a design problem which has alternative solutions. Alternatives are analyzed considering the needs and wants of a customer, safety, standards, and feasibility in the context of global, economic, environmental, and societal impacts. The teams finalize their design, producing a Project Design Report that demonstrates an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within multiple realistic constraints such as standards, economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability. This is the complete documented design of their project including detailed block diagrams and schematics. The course culminates with a preliminary design review that includes a team presentation. Students maintain an engineering log documenting important aspects of the design and their individual contribution to the project. (prereq: completion of all ELE 1xxx and ELE 2xxx level courses, and completion of five or more ELE 3xxx level courses) (quarter system prereq: completion of all EE 1xxx and EE 2xxx level courses, and completion of at least six or more EE 3xxx level courses) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Approach engineering design problems with an open and creative mind, and use various ideation techniques to explore a variety of alternative solutions
- Form a team to define and solve an open-ended engineering problem
- Use a variety of resources in researching the problem, including technical periodicals, trade journals, patent listings, manufacturers catalogs and application notes
- Keep an engineering log of all design activities
- Develop detailed design specifications
- Understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
- Prepare a project plan that details the steps required for completing the design and development
- Prepare a plan to verify that one of the subsystems will meet the stated requirements
- Design to match a set of detailed specifications and constraints
- Utilize past coursework to generate a design solution
- Conduct a preliminary design review that includes a team presentation of design progress and status
