BIE 3200 - Biopolymer and Nanomaterial Engineering3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits Course Description The course introduces various classes of biopolymers and nanomaterials and their applications in selected subspecialties. An understanding of material bulk and surface properties, biocompatibility, manufacturing processes, sterilization, packaging, and regulatory issues in terms of developing and engineering polymers and nanomaterials are stressed. Topics range from polymerization, nanomaterials and nanostructures, nanofabrication, bionanotechnology and nanobiotechnology, polymer and nanomaterials characterization techniques, and processes tailoring specific properties to biopolymer purification. (prereq: CHM 2210 and CHM 2310 ) (quarter system prereq: EB 2240) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Categorize different kinds of biopolymers and nanomaterials
- Discuss the step-growth and chain-growth polymerization and biopolymer processing
