BUS 4530 - Personal Financial Planning3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits Course Description This course investigates methods of obtaining, preserving, and increasing personal assets. Students will be exposed to techniques and strategies to develop an understanding of how to become financially responsible and to make intelligent financial decisions. Students will design personal and household budgets, simulate to use of a brokerage investment account, demonstrate knowledge of finance, debt, credit management, insurance, and taxes. The course will provide a foundational understanding for making informed personal financial decisions. (prereq: none) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the importance of personal financial planning, and how to use personal financial statements in budgeting and cash flow management
- Explain the various types of consumer credit available and demonstrate how to qualify and utilize those types of credit for major purchases such as automobiles and homes
- Discuss the characteristics of property insurance, liability insurance, health insurance, and life insurance, and how to use those various types of insurance to protect against catastrophic financial losses
- Demonstrate knowledge about stocks, bonds, and real estate investments and how these investments fit into retirement and estate planning
- Apply knowledge of the United States tax code to financial decisions
