GER 1001 - Elementary German

2 lecture hours 2 lab hours 3 credits
Course Description
Elementary German focuses on developing language proficiency through linguistic interaction, collaboration, and problem solving. It introduces the basic elements of the language and includes exposure to aspects of German-speaking cultures. Equal attention to aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing skills conducted entirely in German using a task-based approach. Students learn by doing and use the four skills to accomplish real-life/language learning tasks. Not open for credit to students who have had four or more years of German in high school. This course meets the following Raider Core CLO requirement: Embrace Diversity or Exhibit Curiosity. (prereq: none)
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Comprehend spoken German with sufficient ability to grasp the main idea and some supporting details in short conversations, both spontaneous and recorded, that relate to daily life and represent authentic situations
  • Speak German well enough to have short conversations with native speakers about topics such as describing activities and events in the present and past, giving commands, giving advice and recommendations, expressing emotions and feelings, providing or obtaining specific information for survival, as well as being able to talk about customs, pastimes, health, and quality of life
  • Read and understand newspaper articles and brief segments taken from various forms of literature that touch on many different topics
  • Write a coherent string of sentences with some organization in a paragraph-like format of varying lengths on topics that relate to personal situations and experiences as well as more general topics that deal with world events and situations that occur in daily life
  • Acquire new information and reinforce their knowledge of other disciplines through the German language
  • Use the German language to participate in German communities at home and around the world

Prerequisites by Topic
  • No previous knowledge of German is required to register.
  • The course is not open to those with previous college study of German, more than four years of high school German, or a high language placement score.
