FNA 3001 - Creative Writing3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits Course Description An introduction to creative writing, the course will investigate and instruct students in the process of creating original prose, poetry, and/or dramatic format works. The class will focus on a minimum of two genres and will cover both experimental and traditional forms. Together, the instructor and the students offer support and critical feedback about each student’s work. Weekly class discussions and writing assignments focus on principles of voice, style, plot, tension, character, scene, and dialogue. Attention will be given to these principles and other elements that increase the readability and subsequent reception. This course meets the following Raider Core CLO requirement: Exhibit Curiosity. (prereq: COM 2001 , and junior standing or instructor consent) (quarter system prereq: GS 1002 or GS 1020H or GS 1002E) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Write original works of short fiction and/or creative nonfiction
- Critique published and peer-written short fiction
- Revise original stories from feedback from instructor and peers
- Develop strong characters, settings, plot, and dialog
- Display the discipline of the daily writing process
- Describe the difference and overlap between poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and drama
- Practice reading, annotating, and discussing the work of their peers
- Discuss fiction writing using appropriate terminology
