BUS 2225 - Health Care Economics

Course Description
This course introduces concepts of economics and financial management within the health care industry. Course topics include principles of economics, fundamentals of managed care systems and health reform, budgets and budget preparation, financial analysis, and global health care models. (prereq: none)
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Explain how economic principles and policies apply to the health care market locally, regionally, and nationally to identify patterns across populations
  • Explain the relationships of macrosystems, mesosystems, and microsystems
  • Analyze the impact of managed care on cost, quality, and access within managed care organizations and the health insurance market, looking at financial and payment models within the health care industry
  • Understand how the public health system addresses clinical health care across populations
  • Understand the purposes of cost-benefit analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, and break-even analysis with respect to health care decision-making
  • Review and analyze basic financial reports used by health care organizations to aid in decision-making
  • Explain the relationship of policy, regulatory requirements, and economics on care outcomes
