COM 1001 - College Writing

Course Description
This course emphasizes writing as a process, from planning and drafting through revising and editing. Using personal experience, assigned readings, and other sources, students write unified, coherent, and well-developed pieces of writing. They practice paraphrasing, summarizing, responding to, and synthesizing sources. This course meets the following Raider Core CLO requirement: Communicate Effectively. (prereq: none)
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Practice writing as a process (brainstorming ideas, researching, drafting, revising, and editing)
  • Select appropriate rhetorical modes (narrative, description, definition, etc.)
  • Create clear thesis statements to guide the content of the writing
  • Construct logical, organized arguments with appropriate transitions
  • Develop paragraphs around a central idea (topic sentence) and support those paragraphs with adequate and appropriate details 
  • Craft strong introductions and conclusions (including telling stories)
  • Correct sentence-level errors 
  • Demonstrate close reading of a variety of texts 
  • Differentiate between paraphrase and summary and apply each effectively
  • Use direct quotes appropriately and “unpack” (explain) them
  • Successfully synthesize multiple texts and sources to support a thesis statement
  • Participate in large and small group discussions
  • Participate in writing workshops (focus on listening and revising)
  • Read art and artwork as text and understand contextuality across media
