AE 5530 - Advanced Fire Protection Systems3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits Course Description The course focus is alternative types of fire suppression systems other than the tradition wet pipe automatic sprinkler systems. The water-based suppression topics include standpipe hose valve, dry pipe, preaction, deluge, water mist and residential systems. Non water-based suppression systems including gaseous-, chemical- and foam- based systems. Students will explore alternative configurations to the traditional tree figuration and understand the hydraulic calculations associated with complex system configurations. Students will be expected to analyze a commercial and/or industrial situation and propose a system design. Students will be expected to research, write and present on an advanced fire protection topic. (prereq: AE 3521 or equivalent) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Gather data needed to identify the best fire suppression system application
- Identify design criteria for a fire suppression system
- Understand appropriate resources needed in a fire suppression design
- Perform hydraulic calculations for complex suppression configurations
- Understand the applications, benefits and environmental concerns of non water-based suppression systems
