UX 3001 - Communicating with Data

Course Description
The course provides a non-technical overview of the data visualization field, covering basic vocabulary, techniques, and tools. The course emphasizes the importance of data visualization to engage audiences, highlight trends and patterns, and communicate findings. Students will complete a mini-project to visualization an impactful data point(s) for a specific audience. (prereq: none)
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Recognize, explain, and apply fundamental concepts and conventions of data visualization
  • Describe data types and types of visualization
  • Identify appropriate techniques to create an impactful data point of view
  • Be aware of the industry-standard tools for data visualization
  • Design an impactful data point of view for target users

  • Basic understanding of design principles, typography, color, and graphics
