SS 477 - Adaptive Reuse and Tactical Urbanism in the 21st Century City3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits Course Description This course will introduce students to the ways that adaptive reuse-the renovation and reuse of pre-existing structures for new purposes-and tactical urbanism-a city, organizational, and/or citizen-led approach to neighborhood building using short-term, low-cost, and scalable interventions to catalyze long-term change-can be employed to address these landscapes of abandonment. Both adaptive reuse and tactical urbanism provide tools to transform buildings designed for the industrial age into structures that can speak to the concerns of the twenty-first century city. Such tools are particularly useful for young professionals, like engineers, who will be charged to rebuild America’s cities and revitalize the nation’s crumbling infrastructure.
