MI 16030 - Data Management and Systems Integration2 lecture hours 4 lab hours 4 credits
Course Description
In this course, students will investigate data modeling and database design to address information needs in the health care environment. In addition, students will learn ways to standardize data, methods used to exchange data, and standards and regulations impacting data sharing and information exchange. This course will also explore current tools used in integrating systems and exchanging information contained within diverse data courses. (prereq: MI 15010 , MI 15020 )
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Evaluate the structure of an existing database to determine its readiness for a systems integration project
- Assess the data within an existing database to determine the standardization and mapping required for a systems integration project
- Create a change management strategy, implementation plan, and communication plan for a systems integration project
- Recommend a validation strategy for a systems integration project
- Summarize ethical, legal, and social considerations for a systems integration project
Prerequisites by Topic
- To appropriate manage data and integrate disparate health care technologies, students must have a fundamental understanding of the health care environment in which they work (how the data is generated and entered), as well as a grounding in informatics concepts (such as standardized documentation, terminologies, and ontologies). As a result, the entire course (vs. per topic) requires content from MI 15010 and MI 15020 for a student to be successful
