Overview

The Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) program enables newly graduated and graduate engineering professionals to further their problem-solving skills through the application of advanced engineering principles and methods. The strength of this program is in its flexibility. This program offers students an opportunity to advance their quantitative and analytical skills through the choice of specialty courses in electrical engineering or mechanical engineering and/or other related fields. Furthermore, this program allows for breadth and depth of engineering topics in a course-only option or a culmination in a capstone project as an alternate option.

The MSE program is aimed toward newly graduated students and engineers who are involved in industrial projects. The program’s major emphasis is on the further development of engineering knowledge and skills to enhance the productivity of the practicing engineer. It provides a flexible platform for students to take either an integrated approach or a specialized approach to meet the demands of their engineering practice. Students in the MSE program will have an opprtunity to earn graduate certificates in additive manufacturing, fluid power, and/or machine learning.

Courses include topics such as applied engineering analysis, quality engineering, experimental stress analysis, computational fluid mechanics, fatigue and fracture, tribology, additive manufacturing, applied automation control, advanced mechatronics, composite manufacturing, electrohydraulic components and systems, specialty electric machines, power systems and quality, data communications, neural networks, embedded systems, modern control systems, fluid power systems, etc.

A six-credit capstone engineering project option is included as part of the program. A course-only option is also available.

Program Educational Objectives

  1. Graduates create value in a process or product at their workplace through application of advanced engineering skills and knowledge.
  2. Graduates advance in their careers as a direct result of completing the degree.

Student Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the MSE program will:

  1. Utilize advanced mathematics, with a primary focus on numerical methods and models, to solve engineering problems involving multivariate differential systems.
  2. Demonstrate an ability to apply advanced engineering principles to complex problems in their chosen specialty.
  3. Demonstrate an ability to integrate and analyze technical information.

  4. Effectively communicate technical concepts.

Required Core


Students complete the following 3-credit course:

Specialty Core


All students complete 15 credits from the specialty core. Students choosing the course-only (non-Capstone) option take an additional 6 credits from this core. Course offerings vary by year.

Free Elective


The free electives can be graduate-level courses from other disciplines.

Capstone Experience


Students choosing the Capstone option are required to take the following courses.

Notes:


  • MSOE undergraduates can apply up to 6 credits toward the MSE degree if they choose to register in 5000-level offerings for their senior electives.
  • Up to 6 transfer credits are allowed for applicable graduate-level coursework from other programs in institutionally accredited US universities.
