Overview

The MSE program enables graduate engineering professionals to further their problem-solving skills through the application of advanced engineering principles and methods. The strength of this program is in its flexibility. The program offers students the opportunity to advance their quantitative skills through a series of modeling-based courses and provides for their choice of specialty courses in electrical engineering or mechanical engineering and/or other related fields. The program allows for breadth and depth of engineering topics and culminates in either a project or final paper where the student must integrate the knowledge and skills learned in the program.

The MSE is aimed toward engineers who are involved with industrial projects. The program’s major emphasis is on the further development of engineering knowledge and skills to enhance the productivity of the practicing engineer. It provides a flexible platform for students to take either an integrated approach or a specialized approach to meet the demands of their engineering practice. 

Courses include topics such as system dynamics, numerical methods, discrete event simulation, quality engineering, microelectromechanical systems, experimental stress analysis, computational fluid mechanics, fatigue and fracture, specialty electric machines, power systems and quality, data communications, neural networks, embedded systems, modern control systems, and fluid power systems.

A six-credit capstone engineering project option is included as part of the program. A non-project option is also available, which includes one specialty course and a three-credit engineering specialty paper.

Student Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the MSE program will:

  1. Be able to utilize advanced mathematics, with a primary focus on numerical methods and models, to solve engineering problems involving multivariate differential systems
  2. Have demonstrated an ability to apply advanced engineering principles to complex problems in his or her chosen specialty
  3. Have demonstrated an ability to integrate and analyze information in a chosen specialty in the form of scholarly work, either as an independent specialty paper or as an independent engineering project
  4. Have the ability to effectively present and communicate technical concepts, both orally and in writing

Students can choose to complete the program in two years or five years. See below for the course sequences for each option.

Required Core


Students complete 12 credits of the courses below, with a choice between IND 6120 or IND 6130.

Free Elective


The free elective can be any graduate-level course from any discipline.

Notes:


  • MSOE undergraduates can apply up to 6 credits toward the MSE degree if they choose to register in 5000-level offerings for their senior electives.
  • Up to 6 transfer credits are allowed for applicable coursework from other graduate programs in regionally accredited US universities.

Two-year option


Students may complete the program in two years, taking courses in fall, spring, and summer terms:

Year one (fall, spring, and summer):

  • EGR 6010
  • EGR 6020
  • Six credits from the specialty core
  • Free elective

Year two (fall, spring, and summer):

  • EGR 6110
  • IND 6120 or IND 6130
  • Three credits from the specialty core
  • Capstone experience (the project option) OR three 6000-level credits from the specialty core (for students choosing the non-project option) and specialty paper

Five-year option


Students may also complete the program in five years, taking courses in fall and spring terms:

First two years (fall and spring):

  • EGR 6010
  • EGR 6020
  • EGR 6110
  • IND 6120 or IND 6130

Third year and fourth year (fall and spring):

  • Nine credits from the specialty core
  • Free elective

Fifth year (fall and spring):
