Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering program (BSEE) at MSOE places a very strong emphasis on design, applications, and experience-based learning through laboratory experimentation. The laboratory is a great place to work out the details of your understanding of the theory. Consequently, the BSEE program at MSOE prepares its graduates for successful entry into the engineering profession, as well as for graduate school.
The traditional four-year map of the BSEE program begins with an introduction to electrical engineering and a programming course along with important tools of EE: calculus, physics, and college writing. The curriculum flows naturally from there to the advanced EE applications courses, electives, and the year-long senior design experience.
There are additional curriculum maps (paths) within the BSEE program at MSOE. Qualified students who have earned an Associate of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering Technology (AAS-EET) degree from colleges with which MSOE holds articulation agreements can transfer efficiently into the BSEE program.
Another curriculum map provides MSOE BSEE students the opportunity to study abroad in their junior year at the Technische Hochschule Lübeck (THL) in Lübeck, Germany. This is a tremendous opportunity for anyone who is thinking about a career path that involves the global economy and viewpoint. All instruction is in English. Students will receive two bachelor of science degrees: one from MSOE and one from THL. Students will graduate in four years if they follow the EE curriculum map.
Program Educational Objectives
The electrical engineering program prepares graduates to attain the following objectives within a few years of graduation:
- Be productive and successful in their chosen career field by assuming greater degrees of responsibility and/or assuming leadership roles.
- Actively participate in the affairs of their profession and continue with their professional development.
Student Outcomes
In support of the program objectives, graduates of the program will have:
- an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
- an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
- an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
- an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
- an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
- an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
- an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
The Electrical Engineering (BS) program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the commission’s General Criteria and Program Criteria for Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

1Three Raider Core electives (9 credits total) are required from the HSC department. These courses are selected from an approved course listing such that all of the following Common Learning Outcomes are completed: one course to address Exhibit Curiosity, one course to address Embrace Diversity, and one course to address Demonstrate Ethical Understanding (PHL 3101, PHL 3102, or PHL 3103).
2One Raider Core elective (3 credits) is required from the HSC, Mathematics, or Physics and Chemistry departments. This course is selected from an approved course listing such that one of the following Common Learning Outcomes is completed: Collaborate Successfully, Exhibit Curiosity, Think Critically, Demonstrate Ethical Understanding, or Embrace Diversity.
3Four electives (12 credits total) are to be selected according to the following definitions:
- ECBE or CSSE Technical Elective: a 4000-level ECBE or CSSE course selected from the list of approved courses maintained by the EE program. A minimum of 6 ECBE or CSSE Elective credits are required by the EE program and must be taken at MSOE unless approved by the EE Program Director.
- Technical Elective: a 2000-level or higher course in an engineering discipline, computer science, physics, or mathematics that is not already required as part of the EE program. A minimum of 3 Technical Elective credits are required by the EE program.
- Free Elective: any course offered at or transferred in for a cataloged course at MSOE that is not on the free elective exclusion list maintained by the EE program. Courses that do not transfer in for a cataloged MSOE course may be counted as free elective credit with EE program director approval. A minimum of 3 Free Elective credits are required by the EE program.
- If an ECBE or CSSE course is chosen for a free or technical elective, it will count toward the student’s major GPA.
Electrical Engineering, B.S. Version S1A (German Study Abroad Program, MSOE students)
This map is taken by MSOE EE students who participate in the study abroad program and enroll at Technische Hochschule Lübeck (THL) in Lübeck, Germany, for the entire third year of the EE program.
Electrical engineering students interested in participating in the study abroad program at THL must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher at the end of the Fall Semester of their second year and be in good academic standing at the end of Spring Semester of their second year. In addition, all of the following courses must be completed by the end of the Spring Semester of the second year: MTH 1110, MTH 1120, MTH 2140, MTH 2130, MTH 2480, PHY 1110, PHY 1120, ELE 1601, ELE 2001, ELE 2011, ELE 3101, ELE 2610, and CPE 1500.

5 For the German Study Abroad program, students originating at MSOE and attending THL during the third year satisfy the Technical Elective and one of the ECBE or CSSE Technical Elective requirements while at THL. As a result, two remaining electives (6 credits total) are required are to be selected according to the following definitions:
- ECBE or CSSE Technical Elective: a 4000-level ECBE or CSSE course selected from the list of approved courses maintained by the EE program. A minimum of 3 ECBE or CSSE Elective credits are required and must be taken at MSOE unless approved by the EE Program Director.

Electrical Engineering, B.S. Version S1B (German Study Abroad Program, THL Students)
This map is taken by THL EE students who participate in the study abroad program and enroll at MSOE for their fourth year plus a summer. THL students will transfer in 71 total credits for the first two years.

6 For the German Study Abroad program, THL-originating students are required to take four electives (12 credits total) while at MSOE. The elective definitions below are satisfied through three specified courses, and one student-selected course according to the following definitions and guidelines:
- ECBE or CSSE Technical Elective: a 4000-level ECBE or CSSE course selected from the list of approved courses maintained by the EE program. A minimum of 6 ECBE or CSSE Elective credits are required by the EE program, of which a minimum of 3 credits must be an approved image processing course. These courses must be taken at MSOE unless approved by the EE Program Director.
- Technical Elective: a 2000-level or higher course in an engineering discipline, computer science, physics, or mathematics that is not already required as part of the EE program. A minimum of 3 Technical Elective credits are required by the EE program. This requirement is satisfied by EGR 6110.
- Free Elective: any course offered at or transferred in for a cataloged course at MSOE that is not on the free elective exclusion list maintained by the EE program. Courses that do not transfer in for a cataloged MSOE course may be counted as free elective credit with EE program director approval. A minimum of 3 Free Elective credits are required by the EE program. This requirement is satisfied by BUS 2510.

This map is taken by students who completed an AAS-EET degree at an institution with which MSOE has a formal articulation agreement.

7 Four courses are required to satisfy the Raider Core Electives and their associated Common Learning Outcomes (CLO).
- Three of these electives must be (or transfer as) courses from the HSC department and satisfy the following CLOs (one distinct course per outcome): Exhibit Curiosity, Embrace Diversity, and Demonstrate Ethical Understanding (PHL 3101, PHL 3102, or PHL 3103).
- The fourth must be (or transfer as) a course from the HSC, Mathematics, or Physics and Chemistry departments and satisfy at least one of the following CLOs: Collaborate Successfully, Think Critically, Exhibit Curiosity, Embrace Diversity, or Demonstrate Ethical Understanding.
- AAS-EET to BSEE Transfer students typically transfer two Raider Core Electives and take the remaining two at MSOE. Students with transfer credit should consult their MSOE academic advisor to ensure these CLO requirements are met.
8 For the AAS-EET to BSEE map, certain transfer-approved courses taken at the two-year college nominally satisfy the Free Elective and Technical Elective requirements. Thus, two remaining electives (6 credits total) are required that satisfy the ECBE or CSSE Technical Elective definition:
- ECBE or CSSE Technical Elective: a 4000-level ECBE or CSSE course selected from the list of approved courses maintained by the EE program. A minimum of 6 ECBE or CSSE Elective credits are required by the EE program and must be taken at MSOE unless approved by the EE Program Director.
Electrical Engineering, B.S. Version S1D (Pre-engineering Transfer Pathway)
This map will be available to students starting in Fall 2025.
This map is taken by students who completed a pre-engineering degree at an institution with which MSOE has a formal articulation agreement.
It assumes an incoming student has completed coursework equivalent to the following MSOE courses: COM 1001, COM 3001, MTH 1110, MTH 1120, PHY 1110, PHY 1120, CHM 1010, ELE 1000, ELE 2021 or ELE 2001, as well as general education courses accepted for transfer that cover the Embrace Diversity and Exhibit Curiosity Common Learning Outcomes, and a Raider Core Elective . Students who are missing one or more of these courses may experience a delay in graduation. The MSOE transfer manual can be used to determine transferability of coursework, and courses not currently in the transfer manual can be submitted for transfer evaluation.

9 For the Pre-Engineering to BSEE map, an equivalent of ELE 2021 Transfer Electric Circuits is typically taken at the two-year college and ELE 2022 Bridge Electric Circuits is taken at MSOE to complete the required circuits sequence. If, instead of ELE 2021, an equivalent of ELE 2001 Electric Circuits I: Theory and Applications has been taken at the two-year college, then ELE 2011 Electric Circuits II: Theory and Applications is taken to complete the required circuits sequence.
10Four electives (12 credits total) are to be selected according to the following definitions:
