Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering program (BSEE) at MSOE places a very strong emphasis on design, applications, and experience-based learning through laboratory experimentation. The laboratory is a great place to work out the details of your understanding of the theory. Consequently, the BSEE program at MSOE prepares its graduates for successful entry into the engineering profession, as well as for graduate school.
The traditional four-year map of the BSEE program begins with an introduction to electrical engineering and a programming course along with important tools of EE: calculus, physics, and college writing. The curriculum flows naturally from there to the advanced EE applications courses, electives, and the year-long senior design experience.
There are additional curriculum maps (paths) within the BSEE program at MSOE. Qualified students who have earned an Associate of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering Technology (AAS-EET) degree from colleges with which MSOE holds articulation agreements can transfer efficiently into the BSEE program.
Another curriculum map provides MSOE BSEE students the opportunity to study abroad in their junior year at the Technische Hochschule Lübeck (THL) in Lübeck, Germany. This is a tremendous opportunity for anyone who is thinking about a career path that involves the global economy and viewpoint. All instruction is in English. Students will receive two bachelor of science degrees: one from MSOE and one from THL. Students will graduate in four years if they follow the EE curriculum map.
Program Educational Objectives
The electrical engineering program prepares graduates to attain the following objectives within a few years of graduation:
- Be productive and successful in their chosen career field by assuming greater degrees of responsibility and/or assuming leadership roles.
- Actively participate in the affairs of their profession and continue with their professional development.
Student Outcomes
In support of the program objectives, graduates of the program will have:
- an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
- an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
- an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
- an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
- an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
- an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
- an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies

1Three Raider Core electives (9 credits total) are required from the HSC department. These courses are selected from an approved course listing such that all of the following Common Learning Outcomes are completed: one course to address Exhibit Curiosity, one course to address Embrace Diversity, and one course to address Demonstrate Ethical Understanding.
2One Raider Core elective (3 credits) is required from the HSC, Mathematics, or Physics & Chemistry departments. This course is selected from an approved course listing such that one of the following Common Learning Outcomes is completed: Collaborate Successfully, Exhibit Curiosity, Think Critically, Demonstrate Ethical Understanding, or Embrace Diversity.
3Four electives (12 credits total) are to be selected according the following definitions:
- EECS Technical Elective: a 4000-level EECS course selected from the list of approved courses maintained by the EE program. Two EECS Technical Electives are required.
- Technical Elective: a 2000-level or higher course in an engineering discipline, physics, or mathematics area that is not already required as part of the EE program. One Technical Elective is required.
- Free Elective: any course offered at MSOE that is not already required by the EE program and that is not on the free elective exclusion list maintained by the EE program. One Free Elective is required.
Electrical Engineering, B.S. Version S1A (German Study Abroad Program, MSOE students)
This map is taken by MSOE EE students who participate in the study abroad program and enroll at Technische Hochschule Lübeck (THL) in Lübeck, Germany, for the entire third year of the EE program.
Electrical engineering students interested in participating in the study abroad program at THL must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher at the end of the Fall Semester of their second year and be in good academic standing at the end of Spring Semester of their second year. In addition, all of the following courses must be completed by the end of the Spring Semester of the second year: MTH 1110, MTH 1120, MTH 2140, MTH 2130, MTH 2480, PHY 1110, PHY 1120, ELE 1601, ELE 2001, ELE 2011, ELE 3101, ELE 2610, and CPE 1500.

- EECS Technical Elective: a 4000-level EECS course selected from the list of approved courses maintained by the EE program. One EECS Technical Elective is required.
- Free Elective: any course offered at MSOE that is not already required by the EE program and that is not on the free elective exclusion list maintained by the EE program. One Free Elective is required.

This map is taken by THL EE students who participate in the study abroad program and and enroll at MSOE for their fourth year plus a summer.

This course is selected from an approved course listing such that it addresses the remaining Common Learning Outcome that is not already addressed by THL coursework, out of: Exhibit Curiosity, Embrace Diversity, and Demonstrate Ethical Understanding.
8For THL-originating students, four electives (12 credits total) are to be taken while at MSOE. The elective definitions below are satisfied through three specified courses, and one student-selected course according to the following definitions and guidelines:
- EECS Technical Elective: a 4000-level EECS course selected from the list of approved courses maintained by the EE program. Two EECS Technical Electives are required, one of which must be an approved image processing course.
- Technical Elective: a 2000-level or higher course in an engineering discipline, physics, or mathematics area that is not already required as part of the EE program. This requirement is satisfied by EGR 6110.
- Free Elective: any course offered at MSOE that is not already required by the EE program and that is not on the free elective exclusion list maintained by the EE program. This requirement is satisfied by BUS 2510 .
Electrical Engineering, B.S. Version S1C (AAS-EET to BSEE Transfer)
This map is taken by students who completed an AAS-EET degree at an institution for which MSOE has a formal articulation agreement.
