This four-year bachelor of science degree program prepares engineers for careers in engineering and designing buildings and building systems. Lecture and laboratory courses integrate theory and the practical application of design principles, practices, methods, and materials.

Program Educational Objectives

Within a few years of graduation:

  1. Graduates of the B.S. AE program are expected to pursue and achieve registration as a professional engineer after attaining the required years of work experience stipulated by the relevant licensing board
  2. Graduates of the B.S. AE program are expected to have advanced their technical and professional skills through lifelong learning (e.g., graduated with an advanced degree, regular attendance at conferences and seminars, achieved specialty certifications)
  3. Graduates of the B.S. AE program are expected to have demonstrated a commitment to their profession and to their community by having served in a leadership role in one or more professional and/or public service organizations relevant to their area of expertise
  4. Graduates of the B.S. AE program are expected to have demonstrated an appreciation for sustainable design by having included aspects of sustainability in their completed projects
  5. Graduates of the B.S. AE program are expected to have demonstrated appropriate courses of action in situations involving conflicting professional and ethical interests

Student Outcomes

Upon graduation, a student in the BS in Architectural Engineering program will have the following skills or abilities:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies

Design Specialties

There are three design specialties offered in the architectural engineering program beginning in the junior year. Students must select one of the design specialties:

  • Building electrical systems
  • Building mechanical systems
  • Building structural systems

Notes:

1There are 12 credits of humanities and social science (HU/SS) electives, 6 of which must be in humanities (HU) and 6 must be in social sciences (SS).

2  These three credits may be taken from the math (MA) or science (BI, CH, PH, SC) area.  Consult the Academic Catalog for prerequisites and limitations.

All students must choose one of the three specialty sequences of classes beginning in the winter quarter of the junior year. These specialties include: Building Structural Systems (BSS); Building Mechanical Systems (BMS); or Building Electrical Power Systems (BEPS)

Prerequisite courses vary by specialty.  See Academic Catalog for prerequisite courses.

Refer to the Academic Catalog for a detailed list of requirements for entrance into senior project sequence.

6 A “technical elective” is defined as any AE, CM, CV, engineering, mathematics, science, business administration, technical communications or user experience course, 200/2000 level or higher that is not already required in the curriculum (or equivalent courses from other departments).  General engineering (GE), humanities (HU/SS), nursing (NU) or nursing-specific courses/electives, orientation (OR), ROTC (AF, AR, NS) or undergraduate research (UR) courses are not eligible as technical electives.

Students are required to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam as a condition of graduation. Students must present official results to the Registrar’s Office as proof of having satisfied this requirement.

Students in the Air Force ROTC program may make the following substitutions: AF 3131  for EN 441 , AF 3132  for AE 4412 , AF 4141  for SS 455  (an SS elective).

Students in the Army ROTC program may make the following substitutions: AR 3100  for EN 441 , AR 3200  or AR 3300  for AE 4412  and AR 4100  for SS 455  (an SS elective)
