The mechanical engineering technology program provides students with the education and experience to be successful in various fields of mechanical technology. It does so by emphasizing the application of fundamental scientific and engineering principles to the areas of mechanical design, fluid power, instrumentation/controls and materials.
Completion of the program results in granting the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology degree. Graduates can expect employment in the fields of product design and development, manufacturing systems design, technical sales, plant operations and management, quality assurance, testing and evaluation, utilities, power generation and automated equipment design and service.
The program is designed to accommodate transfer students and working professional students, especially those with associate degrees in mechanical design and related fields. The program is offered in the evenings only. Typically, students will enroll for two classes per quarter. The classes shown in the part-time curriculum track are paired so that the required courses typically can be taken on the same nights of the week. The degree also may be pursued on a full-time basis, with all technical courses offered during the evening hours.
The curriculum introduces technical courses at an early stage. Mathematics and sciences are integrated as they are applied in the technical courses. General studies courses are spread throughout the curriculum. With this arrangement of courses, part-time students experience a continuous blend of technical and support classes throughout the program.
Two technical electives and one free elective allow students to focus on an area of interest. However, the program is designed to produce well-rounded graduates who are competent in all areas of mechanical engineering technology.
Program Educational Objectives
The mechanical engineering technology program at MSOE will prepare graduates for professional success in:
- technical careers, including product design, development and testing, manufacturing, and field sales and service.
- advancement into supervisory and managerial careers.
- community involvement and leadership.
Student Outcomes
Graduates of the mechanical engineering technology program will have:
- an ability to apply the knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of the mechanical engineering technology field in the technical areas of mechanical design, fluid power and instrumentation/control systems.
- an ability to apply the knowledge, principles, and procedures of mathematics, science, engineering and technology to engineering technology problems.
- an ability to conduct, analyze, and interpret experiments; and to apply experimental results to improve processes.
- an ability to design systems, components, and/or processes in the areas of mechanical design, fluid power and instrumentation/control systems.
- an ability to function effectively as a member or leader on a technical team.
- an ability to identify, analyze and solve technical problems.
- an ability to communicate effectively regarding broadly-defined engineering technology activities.
- an understanding of the need for and an ability to engage in self-directed continuing professional development.
- a respect for social and intellectual diversity and an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
- a knowledge of the impact of engineering technology solutions in a societal and global context.
- an understanding and demonstration of the importance of commitment to quality, timeliness, and continuous improvement in engineering operations and systems.
