General Requirements
- A student who has had 0-1 years of high school Spanish is required to take the entire tier 1 beginning Spanish sequence, the entire second-tier intermediate sequence, and two third-tier HU/SS electives. Total courses/credits: 8/24
- A student who has had 2 years of high school Spanish is required to take Spanish II and III (HU 411S and HU 412S ) of the tier 1 beginning Spanish sequence, the entire tier 2 intermediate sequence, and three tier 3 HU/SS electives. Total courses/credits: 8/24
- A student who has had 3 years of high school Spanish is required to take Spanish III (HU 412S ) of the tier 1 beginning sequence, the entire tier 2 intermediate sequence, and three tier 3 HU/SS electives. Total courses/credits: 7/21
- A student who has had 4 years of high school Spanish has the option of testing out of Spanish III (HU 412S ). To test out, a student can take a proficiency exam through the Humanities, Social Science, and Communication Department. This student must receive a score of 81% or above to be excused from taking Spanish I, II, and III. Although excused from these courses, this student would not receive credit for taking these courses. The student excused from the tier 1 beginning sequence is required to take the entire tier 2 intermediate sequence and three tier 3 HU/SS electives. Total courses/credits: 6/18
- If a student does not test out of Spanish III and has had 4 years of high school Spanish, he/she is required to take Spanish III (HU 412S ) of the tier 1 beginning sequence, the entire tier 2 intermediate sequence and three tier 3 HU/SS electives. Total courses/credits: 7/21
- A student who has had 4 years of high school Spanish AND has received a 4 or 5 in AP Spanish will receive credit for Spanish I (HU 410S ) and Spanish II (HU 411S ). Spanish III (HU 412S ) will be waived. To earn the minor, this student is required to take the entire tier 2 intermediate sequence and three tier 3 HU/SS electives. Total courses/credits: 6/18
- A student who passes a proficiency exam through the Humanities, Social Science, and Communication Department for Spanish IV will be waived from Spanish I, Spanish II, Spanish III, and Spanish IV. The student will need to complete Spanish V, Spanish Literature, and three tier 3 HU/SS electives. Total courses/credits: 5/15
- A student who passes a proficiency exam through the Humanities, Social Science, and Communication Department for Spanish V will be waived from Spanish I, Spanish II, Spanish III, Spanish IV, and Spanish V. The student will need to complete Spanish Literature, and three tier 3 HU/SS electives. Total courses/credits: 4/12
- To receive the Minor in Spanish, a student’s cumulative grade point average for required coursework within this discipline must be at least 2.0.
- At least 12 of the credits to be applied towards the Spanish Minor must be earned at MSOE.
