The field of technical communication is a logical extension of the rapid growth in technology. Individuals in this field creatively express ideas and accomplishments of industry, business and other organizations through a variety of technical, scientific, and business documentation, social media, web and multimedia tools. Consequently, individuals in this field have aptitude and education in the humanities, engineering, business, and the sciences and are able to relate readily to people on many levels.
The degree in technical communication at MSOE is designed to provide students with:
- Courses in the major area which allow students to design multimedia documents for business, industry, healthcare, and other institutions.
- Literacy in basic engineering, business, natural sciences and information technologies.
- A core liberal arts education in humanities and social sciences.
Potential employment in a wide variety of fields is available to graduates of the program because of the scope of the degree. Typical employment opportunities for graduates include engineering firms, government, information technology, hi-tech manufacturing, financial, pharmaceutical, medical device industries, public relations firms and mass media.

Note:
1 A minimum of four credits of college-level mathematics, including topical coverage of statistics, and a minimum of four credits of college level science courses with an associated lab, are required. The sum total of the college level courses in mathematics and science must meet the minimum of 16 credits.
2 15 credits of technical electives are required. Technical electives can be any college level course in sciences, engineering, math, business, design, nursing, technical communication. Suggested electives: TC 498 B , CE 1900 , SE 1011 , MS 3410, MS 3411 , MS 382
3 At least six credits of social science (SS) electives and at least six credits of electives chosen from humanities (HU) electives are required. Three additional credits can be chosen from either among the humanities or social science electives.
4 Six credits of a technical communication internship are required. Six credits can be equally divided between two academic quarters. Internships must be approved by the TC Program Director.
