ME 3650 - Systematic Engineering Design

3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits
Course Description
Design is very often understood to be only an intuitive process. Systematic Engineering Design, however, presents methods for much easier and even constant problem solving in the research & development environment. Creativity is coupled to a systematic engineering processes. A project work (ca. 15 weeks) is included. It is based on reality-like assignments, which are solved and worked out by the students themselves. The fundamental steps in product development are trained: ‘Putting down a requirements list - methodical search for solutions - specifying a concept in a specification booklet - drawing sketches of complete machines concepts and of technical details where necessary.’ A final report (Technical File) is required as well as a final presentation of the results in front of student audience. (prereq: junior standing, participation in FHL/MSOE exchange program)
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
• understand the role of the engineer in German industry and society
• understand the process of engineering design as practiced in German industry
• learn the basic rules of mechanical design
• learn safety guidelines and regulations applicable in the European Union
• understand the influence of cost on the design process
• understand design for the environment and design for quality
Prerequisites by Topic
• None
Course Topics
• Introduction - the task of an engineer, systematic approach for design work
• Design as a process - planning period, requirements list and the specification booklet, finding functions, methods for searching solutions, evaluation methods
• Basic rules of design - simple, clear, worst case and backup, principle of force transmission, principle of deformation, principle of self-help, integral- and differential design, inverted function, cause and effect
• Boundary conditions of design work in the company - safety and regulation - European machine guideline - law of product liability - design to safety, rules for safety
• Design to cost - influence on costs, decision on cost reasons, methods/help for cost-effective design, the subject costing in the design process, means for comparing in terms of costs, calculation of costs
• Design to environment - idea, recycling processes, design rules for ecological design of machines
• Quality in the design process - methodical start, the method FMEA
