CE 1900 - Digital Logic I: Combinational Systems2 lecture hours 2 lab hours 3 credits Course Description This course introduces combinational logic analysis and design. The topics include digital signals, binary numbers, logic gates, logic families, combinational building blocks, Boolean algebra, combinational circuit analysis, and combinational circuit design techniques. Emphasis is placed on the VHDL hardware description language as a vehicle for circuit description and simulation. Laboratory exercises require the student to design, simulate, implement, and test a wide range of digital circuits using standard logic families and programmable logic devices. Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: • perform binary and hexadecimal arithmetic
• analyze combinational logic circuits
• design combinational logic circuits
• apply datasheets during analysis and design
• draw timing diagrams for combinational logic circuits
• write VHDL descriptions of combinational logic circuits Prerequisites by Topic • None Course Topics • binary and hexadecimal numbers (2 classes)
• digital signals, logic gates, systems, and timing diagrams (1 class)
• logic reduction techniques (5 classes)
• arithmetic circuits (8 classes)
• logic building blocks (mux, demux, etc.) (4 classes)
