IND 4410 - Six Sigma for Engineers

3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits
Course Description
This course introduces the student to the basic Six Sigma methodology which will allow engineers to solve any problem of sufficient breadth using the Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) approach. In addition this course includes the statistical techniques necessary to implement and complete a Six Sigma project. Students will utilize these techniques in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team to work on a semester long project with open ended outcomes to cement learning.
Prereq: IND 2030  or equivalent (quarter system prereq: MA 262 or equivalent)
Note: None
This course meets the following Raider Core CLO Requirement: None
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Define and understand Six Sigma terminology
  • Understand and perform the five steps of the Six Sigma methodology (DMAIC)
  • Apply qualitative and quantitative tools together with DMAIC to scope potential causes of a problem to a few major contributors
  • Apply manual qualitative and quantitative methods and computer software to solve engineering problems
  • Improve problem solving skills
  • Improve communications skills by writing formal reports and collaborating together as a multidisciplinary team
  • Complete a team-based project involving the design, construction, testing, and improvement of a small system
