BUS 3800 - Continuous Improvement

Course Description
This course introduces students to improvement methodologies with a focus on how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming business operations and continuous improvement. Students will explore foundational tools such as Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA), the seven basic quality tools, and the House of Quality, alongside core principles continuous improvement, including systems thinking, standardized work, visual management, and team-based problem solving. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to design and evaluate continuous improvement methodologies using both traditional tools and AI-enhanced solutions.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Explain key Integrated Work Systems and improvement methodologies such as Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) and House of Quality, including their roles in creating value for the company
  • Apply the seven basic quality tools and techniques (e.g., visual management, root cause analysis, work standardization) to solve operational problems
  • Define customer value and apply voice of the customer techniques for obtaining stakeholder feedback
  • Analyze the components of an integrated work system and its alignment with organizational strategy, performance metrics, and stakeholder needs.
  • Apply AI tools and techniques to augment traditional continuous improvement strategies
