NUR 7221 - PMHNP Practicum 30 lecture hours 15 lab hours 5 credits
Course Description
APRN application of knowledge from research and theory will guide the development of skills related to prevention of illness, therapeutic relationships, and assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute and chronic mental health problems. Care strategies will include psychotherapy, psychopharmacological prescribing, patient education, follow-up, and referral. A variety of modalities will be used to demonstrate the development of the skills in safe, effective, ethical, integrative, and holistic person-centered care and health promotion, while advancing knowledge of the scope of practice of the psychiatric mental health APRN.
Prereq: NUR 7210 , NUR 7211
Coreq: NUR 7220
Note: This practicum course requires 210 hours of psychiatric mental health advanced practice nursing and clinical supervision in a psychiatric mental health setting.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate culturally appropriate person-centered therapeutic relationship building, assessment, intervention, and evaluation skills in the holistic care of clients across the lifespan
- Interpret subjective and objective data to develop appropriate diagnoses and evidence-based management plans for selected patients with psychiatric mental health diagnoses
- Select appropriate medications according to patient age, presentation, and unique patient factors
- Employ appropriate health promotion and disease prevention strategies in the management of the healthcare needs of the psychiatric mental health patient
- Facilitate a holistic integrative plan of care to promote wellness across the lifespan
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to improve the quality of healthcare
- Involve the patient and family in the formulation of management plans that align with their goals and perspectives of mental health and wellness
- Apply ethical and legal principles to the healthcare needs and management of acutely ill psychiatric mental health patients
- Facilitate a holistic integrative plan of care to promote wellbeing across the lifespan
