PSY 3002 - Psychological Disorders and Mental Health

Course Description
This course provides an in-depth examination of psychological disorders and mental health. The course is designed to build students’ awareness and recognition of serious mental health issues. Topics of discussion include a history of psychological disorders, treatment methods for psychological disorders, and a variety of specific psychological disorders. After taking this course, students should be capable of discussing mental health issues, demonstrate an understanding of why/how psychological disorders develop and best practices for treatment, and think critically about mental health issues they hear about every day.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of the major theories and principles of psychopathology (the scientific study of mental disorders)
  • Apply the principles of psychological inquiry to the mental processes and behavior of oneself and others when it is unusual, distressing, or dysfunctional
  • Identify which type of therapeutic intervention fits a particular type of mental health disorder
  • Critically evaluate current issues in the field of psychopathology
  • Promote mental health awareness in an inclusive manner
  • Demonstrate understanding of psychological information through written and oral communication
