SOC 1001 - Foundations of Sociology

Course Description
This course provides an introductory exploration of the multi-faceted discipline of sociology, the study of individual and group processes, patterns and social systems, and their effects on individuals, organizations, and society. The course emphasizes the fundamental theories of sociology, encouraging students to critically examine familiar worlds from new perspectives. Topics covered include culture and media; socioeconomic inequalities; deviance and crime; research methods and research ethics; and inequalities of race, ethnicity and gender. Through this course, the student should gain an increased understanding of the field of sociology, an enhanced ability to think critically, and the ability to apply sociological principles to everyday life.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Explain basic knowledge of the major theories and principles of sociology
  • Exhibit an understanding of and apply the principles of sociological inquiry to one’s own culture and society, and to changes taking place in the world
  • Articulate a greater understanding and appreciation of, and respect for, human diversity
  • Exhibit an increasing objectivity and openness toward the needs of society as a whole, and better understand the social determinants of human behavior
  • Critically evaluate current issues in the field of sociology
  • Demonstrate an understanding of sociological information through written and oral communication skills
