ARE 3151 - Design of Lighting Systems

3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits
Course Description
Building lighting systems and site lighting will be explored through application of lighting principles. Students will learn about light sources, visual comfort, lighting control systems and daylighting. Hand calculations will be followed by use of a lighting software program. Code compliance in areas of egress and emergency lighting, as well as energy codes, will be integrated into a lighting design problem that will serve as the final project for the course.
Prereq: ARE 3101  (quarter system prereq: AE 3601)
Note: None
This course meets the following Raider Core CLO Requirement: None
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Apply conceptual design methods to generate an overall design strategy
  • Devise light sources specific to architectural design, space function, and task
  • Devise luminaires specific to architectural design, space function, and task
  • Compose a wide range of lighting control strategies and plan the appropriate technology based on user and space requirements
  • Justify prescribed illumination levels by space type and according to industry standards
  • Prepare calculations to inform design decisions, generating both manual calculations and solutions using lighting design software
  • Design lighting for a facility, document the design, and be able to visually and orally describe and justify the core design concepts
