CAE 1811 - 1st Year Design

2 lecture hours 2 lab hours 3 credits
Course Description
This interactive, team-based course introduces the architectural engineering, construction management, and civil engineering students to their field of study. Students work in multidisciplinary teams to provide a solution to a realistic, semester-long design and construction problem. The students learn the basics of design, construction and constructability, site development, project management, sustainability, ethics, professional practice, and lifelong learning.  Skills learned from a corequisite course, Introduction to CAECM Graphics, will be utilized. The course culminates in a final team presentation to a panel of jurors.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Discuss the professional responsibilities and ethical conduct expectations for registered professional engineers and certified construction managers
  • Explain the building design process and the roles that architectural engineers, civil engineers, and construction managers play in the development and execution of building projects
  • Demonstrate effective teamwork
  • Demonstrate academic, personal, and interpersonal skills that will help the student succeed in college and create a sense of campus involvement
  • Practice skills in oral presentation, written expression, graphic communication, and class participation
