PSY 3001 - Cognitive Psychology

Course Description
This course provides an overview of cognitive psychology - the study of how people perceive, learn, remember, and think. Cognitive psychology draws on fields within psychology (developmental psychology, social psychology, and clinical psychology) as well as complementary fields (computer science, linguistics, anthropology, and philosophy). Broad topics of discussion include neuroscience, perception and attention, memory, thinking, and learning. Through this course the student should gain an increased understanding of the field of cognitive psychology, an enhanced ability to think critically, and the ability to apply psychological principles to everyday life.
Prereq: None
Note: Students choose between Think Critically or Exhibit Curiosity.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Exhibit basic knowledge of the major theories and principles of cognitive psychology
  • Develop a model for how the human mind works, from lower- to higher-level processes
  • Interpret and critique research findings as they relate to cognitive theories and the real world
  • Improve their metacognitive skills (knowing what you know, learning how to learn)
  • Articulate a greater understanding and appreciation of, and respect for, human diversity
  • Demonstrate an understanding of psychological information through written and oral communication skills
