BUS 5200 - Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits Course Description Effectively meeting the needs of an increasingly diverse population of students presents challenges for educators across the United States. Increasingly rigorous achievement expectations must be supported with flexible, accessible curricula, offering multiple pathways to success in order to secure opportunities for all children. This course focuses on understanding theories and strategies that address the needs of a diverse population that compose today’s classrooms. Included in this course will be diversity issues, planning techniques, effective teaching strategies, differentiated instructional and assessment strategies, motivational concepts, and informal and formal assessment practices. (prereq: none) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Learn strategies for differentiating content, learning process, and learning products
- Identify appropriate tools for assessing student progress, engaging interests, and meeting varied learning styles
- Discuss how to manage a differentiated classroom, focusing in particular on the importance of using assessment data to guide individual instruction
- Reflect on the differentiated instructional strategies you plan to implement in your own classroom/school
- Understand special education policies and laws and allocate resources for efficient delivery of service
